In today’s fast-paced life, I often come across many women who are constantly feeling tired, gaining weight without any clear reason, struggling with irregular periods, and experiencing mood swings. Most of the time, these symptoms are easily ignored under the name of “stress” or “hormonal changes.”

But what if there’s something deeper behind all this? What if the real reason lies in a small, butterfly-shaped gland in your neck — the thyroid?

Let’s understand this in a simple and practical way.

What is the Thyroid & Why It Matters?

The thyroid is a small gland located in the front of your neck. It produces two important hormones—T3 (Tri-iodothyronine) and T4 (Thyroxine)—that control your metabolism.

In simple words, Thyroid gland decides -

- Whether your body works fast or slow and use of energy

- Your metabolism and weight regulation

- Your mood and menstrual cycle management

This means that if it is not functioning properly, you may develop hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, which can affect almost every system in a woman’s body.

Ayurvedic Understanding

Now let’s discuss how ayurveda consider all this

Ayurveda does not directly describe glands or hormones, but we can understand their functions through fundamental concepts like Dosha, Dhatu, Agni.

Types of Thyroid Imbalance

  1. Hypothyroidism (Underactive Thyroid) :- This is a common condition where the thyroid gland doesn’t make and release enough thyroid hormone causing increased level of TSH (Thyroid stimulating hormone) and slow metabolism. It is most common in women.

Common Symptoms:

  • Constant tiredness or fatigue

  •  Weight gain

  •  Cold intolerance

  •  Hair fall

  •  Constipation

  •  Irregular or heavy periods

Ayurvedic Perspective -

        - Predominently Kapha dosha and vata dosha imbalance

        - Mandagni (low metabolic fire )

        - Rasa dhatu dusti(poor nourishment)

        - Meda dhatu dushti( accumulation of fat )

        - Artav Dushti (menstrual disturbances)

                                                                                     Consult for hormonal imbalance

        2. Hyperthyroidism (Overactive Thyroid):- In this condition, the thyroid gland produces excessive T3 and T4 hormones,

leading to decreased levels of TSH and a faster metabolism. It affects the whole body.

Common Symptoms:

                 - Weight loss despite good appetite

             - Anxiety, irritability

             - Palpitations

             - Heat intolerance

             - Light or missed periods

Ayurvedic Perspective –

            - Predominantly Pitta dosha and Vata dosha imbalance

            - Tikshnagni (Excessive Metabolic Fire –less nutrients absorption)

            - Depletion of rasa dhatu(dehydration, malnourishment)

            - Depletion of Artav (scanty periods)

In simple words-

            Hypothyroidism            Slow Body           Kapha Dominance

            Hyperthyroidism           Fast Body            Pitta Dominance

Why Are Women Mosly Affected By Thyroid Issues?

One thing I commonly observe in my practice is that thyroid problems are much more common in women than in men. And it’s not just a coincidence there are strong reasons behind it.

1) Hormonal fluctuation phases in entire life –

  • Puberty

  • Menstrual cycle

  • Pregnancy

  • Post partum

  • Menopause

These constant changes make endocrine system more sensitive and that’s why thyroid gland gets affected very easily in women

2) Strong connection with reproductive hormones- Estrogen and progesterone. Any imbalance in one affects other and due to this women       experiences Irregular Periods ,PMS and fertility issues.

3) Lifestyle factor and stress- As women are more sensitive in nature they can be easily caught by emotional stress , sleep disturbances as well as nutritional deficiencies and these all affects your hormones and metabolism

4) Autoimmune conditions (like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and grave’s disease )- Women have more reactive immune system than men,so they are more prone to such auto immune condition

Ayurvedic View- Women have natural dominance of kapha ,so rasa dhatu (nourishment) can easily affect due to this and reproductive system is closely linked with artava (reproductive health). When digestion and metabolism are not functioning properly ,it creates an imbalance in the body which can reflect as thyroid and menstrual disturbances.

That’s why, in women, thyroid imbalance is not just about weight or fatigue—it has a deep connection with menstrual health and fertility.

Thyroid & Menstrual Cycle Connection

The thyroid has a direct impact on a woman’s menstrual cycle. When thyroid hormones are imbalanced, ovulation may not occur every month, leading to irregular periods.

Some common changes include:

  • Delayed or missed periods

  • Heavy bleeding or very light flow

  • Difficulty in conceiving

This happens because thyroid hormones are closely connected with reproductive hormones, and even a small imbalance can disturb the entire cycle.

Ayurvedic Herbs & Treatment Approach

From an Ayurvedic perspective, the goal is not just to correct thyroid levels but to restore overall balance in the body by improving digestion, metabolism, and hormonal harmony.

1. Focus on Agni (Metabolism)

The first step is to correct Agni (digestive fire) because improper digestion leads to toxin formation (Ama), which disturbs hormonal balance.

Simple practices:

  • Warm, freshly cooked food

  • Avoid overeating and junk food

  • Use spices like jeera, ginger, and turmeric in daily diet

2. Useful Ayurvedic Herbs

Some herbs are traditionally used to support metabolism and hormonal balance:

  • Ashwagandha – Helps in reducing stress, supports thyroid function, and improves energy levels

  • Kanchanar – Commonly used in thyroid-related conditions for reducing glandular swelling

  • Shatavari – Supports female reproductive health and hormonal balance

  • Brahmi – Helps in reducing anxiety and improving mental clarity

3. Panchakarma & Detox (If Needed)

In some cases, detoxification therapies may be advised to remove Ama (toxins) and balance Doshas.

  • Virechana (Purgation therapy) – Useful in Pitta imbalance

  • Basti (Medicated enema) – Helpful in Vata imbalance

  • Udwarthana (Herbal powder massage) – Useful in obesity and Kapha conditions

These should always be done under proper Ayurvedic supervision.

4. Lifestyle & Routine (Very Important)

Maintain a regular sleep cycle

Practice stress management (Yoga, Pranayama, Meditation)

Stay physically active

Avoid excessive screen time and late nights

Important Note

Ayurvedic treatment should always be individualized based on:

  • Prakriti (body constitution)

  • Dosha imbalance

  • Severity of symptoms

  • Avoid self-medication, especially in thyroid conditions.

Instead of only focusing on thyroid levels, Ayurveda works on:

  • Improving metabolism (Agni)

  • Reducing toxins (Ama)

  • Balancing Doshas

  • Supporting reproductive health

This holistic approach helps in long-term management of thyroid disorders.
